The web, by its very nature as hypertext, shows a structure that can be described by means of graphs. The visualisation of said structure, of crucial importance to understanding the results of web mining, is reduced to that of graph drawing. This is, nevertheless a vast field with many possibilities, some of which are presented in this issue.

This is an excellent paper exploring how socially relevant information is transmitted and depicted by computer mediation. In particular it advocates the use of “social proxies” which are minimalist graphical representations of the online presence and activities of people. Whether it’s wrapping up a talk when the audience starts fidgeting, or deciding to forego the grocery shopping because the parking lot is jammed, social information provides a basis for inferences, planning, and coordinating activity.
